Agriculture is the backbone of a country’s economy. It’s the industry that’s ensuring we have enough food to eat.

If you aspire to become a farmer but haven’t a clue about how to get started, we’ve got your back. Read on to find out how to get started in the agriculture industry.

Talk to Farmers

The best way to learn about the industry is to talk to farmers. Get in touch with farmers around your city and set up a coffee or lunch meeting. Tell them that you are interested in becoming a farmer and that you’d like to learn how they operate and how they reached where they are today.

Most farmers do not get such requests frequently but would be happy to help.

Learn About Farming

You don’t need a Ph.D. in Horticulture to become a farmer. However, having in-depth knowledge about the science of agriculture is crucial. There are several complex problems in agriculture that must be solved. And that calls for smart people who understand the science of farming.

This means you may have to get an advanced degree or do an independent study to understand more about the animals/plants you’ll be producing.

Read Up

What’s the one thing that’s common between all the successful people? The fact that they are all avid readers. Read up on several different aspects of the agriculture industry such as accounting, leadership, operations, business skills and more.

Build Deep Relationships

Most people interpret this advice to mean “meeting as many folks as you possibly can”. Although talking to several different people is important (see tip # 1 above), it’s equally important to build deep, lasting relationships. Such relationships take time but they are well worth the investment.

Take the First Steps

The simplest way to get into the industry is to take the first steps no matter how small. While most people dream of owning and operating a large-scale commercial farm, the reality may not be anywhere close to it. So rather than waiting for the ‘right’ opportunity and turning down the options that come your way, buckle up and dive right in. After all, getting a shoe in the industry is better than not having entered at all.

Know that It Takes Time

We live in an era of instant gratification. People want to get things done instantly. While we can order food, grocery, taxi and more at the tap of a button on an app, the same does not hold true for complex things like a farming business or operation. It takes years. If that’s what you really want, then you must be prepared to put in the effort and time. Moreover, you must exhibit patience until you see the results.
