The Construction Industry Back on the Rise

19th September, 2018

The construction industry has seen a positive change in the second quarter (Q2) of 2018, giving a cause for hope and positivity to the Industry.

The industry has survived the collapse of the construction giant Carillion and the harsh weather with amazing tenacity, and it is very positive to see a strong growth in May and June thanks to the warmer weather conditions.

The improved site conditions have allowed project managers to resume work on the ground, which was previously stalled due to the adverse weather conditions in February and March.

A report by The Office for National Statistics for the months of April and June 2018, shows an increase in Q2 output by 0.9%. This is a recovery from a decrease of 0.8% witnessed in 2017. One of the reasons for the growth is a 2.7% increase in repair and maintenance work.

A quarterly survey of the construction industry carried out by Construction Products Association revealed positive developments such as an increase in Q2 activity, rise in workloads and faster employment growth rates.

The good news is that this growth is set to continue over the next quarter thanks to the rising demand in public housing, private housing and infrastructure sectors, which are responsible for £60bn of the industry’s annual output.

Another major improvement witnessed in Q2 is the increase in the sale of construction equipment and earth-moving machines. The increase is 3.8% more than the sales during the same period in 2017.

The equipment to show the highest rate of growth in sales is the 10-tonne crawler excavator. Sales showed 11% growth over the Q2 of 2017.

Other equipment to show increased sales are telehandlers and mini/midi excavators of less than 10-tonne capacity.

Equipment such as backhoe loaders and wheeled loaders recorded a growth in Q2 whereas sales of compaction rollers witnessed a decline over 2017 levels.
