Top 10 Projects to Lookout for in 2019

2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year the UK construction industry with many ambitious projects in the pipeline. From stadiums to residential and commercial developments, 2019 has some great projects planned. Here at MTS Plant we have outlined the top 10 below:

1 Crossrail and HS2

Crossrail is credited with being the biggest infrastructure project that Europe has seen. It will be the newest railway for London, connecting Heathrow and Reading in the west to Abbey and Shenfield in the east, and many stations in-between.

The Railway Line will run for over 60 miles and is expected to make rail transport accessible for over 200 million people annually. The Elizabeth Line will have access to 41 stations including 30 upgraded existing stations and 10 which are to be newly-built.

HS2, short for High Speed 2, is a high-speed railway that’s under construction. Upon completion, the HS2 will connect Birmingham, London, Leeds, Manchester and the East Midlands.

2 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to take place in Birmingham. Contractors for 2 major developments related to the Games have been selected.

One of the developments, costing £70m, is the revamping of the Alexander Stadium, which will serve as the centrepiece venue for the Games. The other development, costing £350m, is that of Athletes’ Village, which will be accommodating about 6,500 athletes and officials attending the Games.

After completion of the Games, the site will be used for building 1,400 new residences.

3 Everton FC Stadium

The new Everton FC stadium is proposed as a 55,000 capacity stadium. This project by the Everton Club is currently in its first stage with public consultations being carried out.

Everton had entered into a deal with Peel Ports in November 2017 to lease land at Bramley Moore Dock area in Liverpool for the project. The Stadium is expected to be a centrepiece in Peel Ports’ £5.5bn Liverpool Waters regeneration plan.

4 Midland Metropolitan and Royal Liverpool Hospitals

The Royal Liverpool Hospital project is a £335m development taken over by the government, that will be completed by the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen NHS Trust. The expected time of completion is 2020.

Midland Metropolitan is also a government-funded project expecting completion in 2022. The contract for early works on the project involving remedial tasks and weatherproofing, was awarded to Balfour Beatty.

5 Stonehenge Tunnel and Lower Thames Crossing

Highways England is responsible for these projects. The budget for the Stonehenge Tunnel project is £1.6bn while the Lower Thames Crossing project has a funding of £6bn. In October, the funding model was revoked by the chancellor. The project is now expected to be funded by the government.

6 The Tulip

Backed by the Brazilian J Safra Group, The Tulip is proposed to be a 305m tower that would primarily serve as an office space. The development will feature sky bridges, viewing galleries, gondola pod rides and internal glass slides. The project is expected to begin in 2020 and will be completed by 2025.

7 101 George Street

101 George Street is a residential development by Greystar and Tide Construction and is expected to be completed in 2019. Located in Croydon, London, this development will be the tallest structure in the world built using the modular construction method.

8 Spire London

Spire London, helmed by the Greenland Group, a state-owned developer from China, will be the tallest residential structure in western Europe upon completion in 2020. The £800m construction will be 771 feet in height and consist of 67 storeys and 861 apartments and penthouses.

9 Elizabeth House Redevelopment

Real estate developer HB Reavis plans to use the 945,000 sq ft Elizabeth House site for a mixed-use development. The development will feature office spaces and homes set in a 10- and 29-storey development.

10 Leeds City Centre Redevelopment

This CEG project is a £350m development set on a 3.5 ha site located in the City Centre’s South Bank. The development will feature retail, office and leisure constructions.
