Importance of Refresher Training

It is important that even experienced plant operators take up refresher training. This ensures that they maintain good operational habits and gather new skills as appropriate. This is a perfect opportunity to also have their competence re-assessed.

The Health Safety Executive (HSE) mandates that operators undertake refresher training courses every 3 to 5 years depending on the level or the risk associated. Of course, more frequent training (at least once a year, where appropriate) is recommended to ensure your operators keep up with all the changes and updates in the plant operation regulations.

In February 2016, HSE announced newer and stricter guidelines would be introduced to ensure untrained operators and operators with expired policies do not come in the way of the safety of others on the site.

The new guidelines make it very clear that in the case of fatal/serious accidents, organisations will face a fine of 10% of their turnover at the very least, and fines have already been issued in excess of £1m.
