Castle Market Demolition Site Sheffield

Sheffield’s Castle Market has for years been a local landmark, however from the inside what once was a bargain hunters paradise is now hardly recognisable. The market closed its doors for good back in November 2013, to coincide with the opening of Sheffield’s brand new Moore Market. Now just over a year on since the market’s closure, the inevitable demolition work is beginning to pick up pace.

At MTS Plant we have recently supplied a Bobcat S550 skid steer loader on hire to Hughes & Salvidge Demolition, who have secured the contract to raise the 1960s building to the ground. The project is expected to take until the end of this year to complete, at which point archaeological work will commence on the original historic castle which lies below the current structure. At this moment in time no one is completely sure how much of the original castle will remain intact, however, it is known that the council already has plans to turn the area into a public park which will feature whatever exposed ruins are currently buried under the market.

We have worked with Hughes & Salvidge, who last year celebrated half a century of trading, for a number of years now, and supplied them with a range of specialist Bobcat machinery for use on many jobs. The Bobcat S550 loader which they have chosen to hire from us for use on this South Yorkshire project, is part of Bobcats new 500 platform which was released in late 2012 and features Bobcats latest cab forward design which increases driver comfort and visibility significantly compared to previous models.

The skid steer loader on hire from MTS has proved a vital piece of equipment for Hughes & Salvidge, as due to its compact size it has been able work inside the market itself collecting debris and rubble with the grapple attachment as show in the image gallery above.
